Republicans Question Removal of Colombian Rebel Group From Terrorist List

Recently, the Biden administration has been facing widespread condemnation for removing the Colombian rebel group FARC off its list of foreign terrorist groups.

According to Reuters, the U.S. State Department told Congress Tuesday that it plans to delist FARC five years after the rebel group had signed a peace accord with the Colombian government.

“President Biden’s delisting of the #FARC as a foreign terrorist organization undermines U.S. security interests and stability in #Colombia and only serves as a gift to the criminal Maduro regime in #Venezuela. The administration should reverse course,”  Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Sen. Jim Risch tweeted.

“Prematurely lifting #FARC’s designation as a terrorist organization is an exercise in appeasement. They have not exercised remorse or acts of contrition for their ongoing narco-terrorism against innocent Colombians & Americans. Our regional allies deserve better from this admin,” the Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs Committee added.

Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, confirmed that the U.S. informed Congress of an action it was taking in regard to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (also known as FARC). However, Price declined to reveal the details of that action.

FARC was accused by many groups including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the United Nations of violating human rights.

Since at least 1994, FARC has been carrying out attacks on civilians, specifically against suspected supporters of paramilitary organizations, political adversaries and journalists.

“In the southern state of Cauca, FARC dissident groups have committed serious abuses, including murder, child recruitment, and forced displacement. They also imposed their own measures to slow the spread of Covid-19, including lockdowns, and threatened, attacked, and killed some for allegedly not complying,” Human Rights Watch reported.
